Like the surrounding area Slussen, named after the lock and built simultaneous to it in 1930–1935, the lock is a concrete construction resting on franki piles (e.g. cast-in-situ piles) located along the sides of the canal and next to the gates. Clas Larsson Fleming was given responsibility for the project and with the help of Dutch carpenters, the 40 meters long, 6 meters wide and 1.5 meters deep lock of Queen Christina was completed in 1642. The customs revenue was sixfold in just a few years and Slussen became a pride for, from 1634 the newly established Swedish capital, Stockholm. The aim is to turn it into one of Stockholm's most attractive meeting spots with cultural events, entertainment venues, parks, restaurants and cafes. The word "Slussen" is Swedish for "the lock", meaning the lock between the Baltic and the lake Mälaren. That lock is at the real first floor of the Slussen construction. Today, "Slussen" is quite a gloomy place though they have tried to refresh it lately. Slussen means "the water locks" in Swedish and is the name of the area in Stockholm, between Gamla Stan (old town) and Södermalm, where locks connect the Baltic Sea with Lake Mälaren.There have been locks here, in some form or another, since the mid 1600's.
